Objectives:
Students will be able to identify a ruler and the basic measurement of an inch
Students will measure a giant heron leg, using their manipulatives: the paper inchworms.

Students will understand that one “inch” worm measures 1 inch on a ruler.
Materials:
1. Book: Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni
2. Ruler
3. Individual Inchworms- 10 per student in a bag
4. Giant heron leg picture on oak tag
5. Glue Stick
6. Worksheet: Measuring and Comparing
7. Picture of inchworm equaling 1 inch
8. Crayons
Procedure:
1. Students will be divided according to table they sit at
2. Hand out manipulative to each student: bag of 10 paper inch worms.
3. Tell students to come quietly sit on story rug
4. Show students a ruler, and ask what the ruler is used for. (Wait for answer of measurement)
5. Point out 1 inch on the ruler. Show students their inchworms are each 1 inch long. (Do this by holding a paper worm up to the 1 inch line on the ruler)
5. Read the book “Inch by Inch” by Leo Lionni
6. Have students return to their seats and empty out the bag of paper worms. Color them for contrast if crayons are available
7. Stand in front of the room with the giant heron leg picture- have students guess how many of their worms are needed to measure the leg.
8. Student’s have to raise their hand to come up and glue their inchworm onto the giant heron leg. (Teacher has glue stick)
9. Count the inchworms on the heron leg- get a total number of inch worms
10. Ask if anyone knows how many inches on the ruler the leg is ( remind students that 1 inch worm is one inch on the ruler)
11. Measure leg with ruler, get number of inches
12. Hand out worksheet to check understanding. Have students measure objects on their worksheet with their individual inchworms. Go over answers with entire class
